We know what you might be thinking, this sounds like the easiest part in your painting project but many mistakes can be made at this point in your job. In this post we’ll discuss how to apply a second coat of paint. We have also compiled some common mistakes made when applying the second coat of paint.

1. You need to wait for your first coat of paint to completely dry before painting your second coat. The surface of your first coat might be dry to your touch but the paint needs time to adhere to the surface so that it does not pull away when painting your second coat. Different paints have different drying times, for latex paint we suggest waiting two to four hours and oil-based paint a minimum of 24 hours between coats.
2. While you wait for your paint to dry you should empty and wash your paint tray, close your bucket of paint and cling wrap your paint brushes to prevent the paint form drying. This will ensure that your second coat of paint looks the same as the first.
3. Mix your paint before painting. If you have bought a large bucket of paint we suggest you stir the paint every few minutes or before pouring some into your paint tray to avoid streaks on your wall. If you have purchased two or more smaller buckets of the same color paint we suggest combining them all into one bucket as no two buckets can be mixed to the exact same shade. By combining and mixing them together you will avoid having a patchy looking wall when you run out of one bucket and need to open another bucket of paint. Ensure that you load your paint brush correctly and clean your brushes  and paint rollers after each use.
